LORHN aims to increase the level of health literacy for individuals residing around Lake Okeechobee. The US Department of Health and Human Services defines health literacy as, “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.” Our intention is to positively impact lives by empowering individuals with a basic understanding and set of skills to navigate the healthcare system and make health decisions. In doing so we strive to reduce the impacts of chronic diseases, reduce preventable hospitalizations, and reduce health care costs for consumers and providers.
